What is ACT?

The ACT was started by Everett Franklin Lindquist, a professor at the University of Iowa, in 1959 as an alternative to the SAT. The ACT exam originally consisted of four main parts. These; They were English (English), Mathematics (Math), Social Studies and Natural Science departments. In the following years, the Social Studies division was renamed Reading, and the rote-based Natural Science division was renamed the Scientific Reasoning division to test students' reasoning and problem-solving abilities. In 2005, the optional Writing-Essay test was added to the ACT.

Who Can Take the ACT Exam?

The ACT, which is an exam that can be taken by students who have completed their high school education in their country and want to study at university, especially in the USA or Canada, is specially designed to measure the ability of people in various fields. To take this exam, you must meet the following requirements:

Completing high school education,
To register the exam from the specified internet address,
To deposit the required exam fee in the registration process,
To have a printout of the exam document that is ready after the registration is completed.

It is important for students who want to take the ACT exam to start preparing for the exam technique, especially from the 3rd grade of high school. There is no age limit specified in the application process for the exam.  How Long Does the ACT Take?

The duration of the exam for students who will not take the Writing exam is 2 hours and 55 minutes, and the total time for students who will take the Writing exam is 3 hours and 35 minutes.

What is the Fee for the ACT?

The fee for the ACT exam is $150 for students who will not take the Writing exam, and $166.50 for students who will take the Writing exam.

ACT Exam Content

The ACT exam consists of 4 different sections. In addition, the candidate can participate in the writing section if he/she wishes.

The sections of the ACT are as follows:

English – 75 Questions

In this section, the candidate is asked 40 grammar questions and 30 vocabulary questions.

Mathematics – 60 Questions

In this section, the candidate is asked questions from the fields of Algebra, Geometry and Trigonometry.

Science – 40 Questions

In this section, the candidate is asked questions from the field of Basic Science, which was taken during high school education.

Reading – 40 Questions

In this section, 20 Social and Natural Sciences and 20 Art and Literature questions are asked to the candidate.

The essay section on the ACT exam is optional. If the candidate wishes to participate in this section, he/she is required to write an essay in English on a given topic.

Each section of the ACT exam is worth 36 points. The value of the composition section is 12 points.

English Department

For the English section with 75 questions, the exam duration is 45 minutes. Here, theoretical and mechanical skills in the use of English are tested. Students' language mastery is measured with questions prepared to test subjects such as sentence structure, punctuation marks, and language usage. A lot of practice will be beneficial while preparing for this section.

Department of Mathematics

In the mathematics section, where 60 minutes are given for 60 questions, students' knowledge of plane geometry, coordinate geometry, trigonometry and algebra are measured. In this section, it is sufficient to have a full command of the mathematics learned at high school level and to be able to use the techniques correctly.

Reading Section

There are 40 questions in this section and students are given 35 minutes to answer the questions. Selected passages in the reading section include literary narratives, prose fiction, humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. Skills such as speed reading, reading comprehension and interpretation are measured in this section.

Science department

This section, which is the last stage of the compulsory sections, consists of 40 questions and takes 35 minutes. During the period of this stage, paragraphs containing the contents of science are given to the students and the questions that follow these paragraphs are asked. While the subjects are suitable for the high school curriculum, the students' ability to evaluate data analysis, their ability to find experimental results, their level of interpreting theoretical knowledge and contradictory perspectives are also measured in this section.

Writing Department

In the non-compulsory writing section, there are no questions and the score obtained in this process is not included in the overall ACT score. In this section, students are asked to write an essay on a determined topic, and both their expression skills and writing skills are evaluated.

• The ACT is a more knowledge-oriented test than the SAT. In the SAT exams, the student must have a good command of the English language, while the ACT is less demanding in this regard.
• Mathematical knowledge forms the basis of the ACT exam.
• Incorrect answers given by the candidate in the ACT do not cause the score to decrease.

• Although the composition section is optional, many universities require candidates to enter this section as well.

• On the day of the exam, the student should have an identity document, exam entrance document, two pencils, an eraser and a calculator

How to Calculate Score in ACT?

In the ACT exam, each section is scored between 1-36. While the maximum score you can get is 36, the average success score of the exam is 21. The average of the total score you get from the sections constitutes the net score you get from the exam. Since the Writing section is optional, the score for the Writing section is calculated between 2-12 points and is kept separate from your overall exam score.
