WHAT IS TOEFL?
The Test of English as a Foreign Language, or TOEFL, was first issued in 1964. If you say what is the TOEFL test in Turkish, it means the English as a Foreign Language Test. While the TOEFL was originally a required test for admission to universities in the United States, it is now accepted by more than 9,000 universities and institutions worldwide in 130 countries, including the United Kingdom, Netherlands, Sweden, New Zealand, Australia, Singapore and Malaysia.
WHAT ARE THE TOEFL TEST TYPES?
TOEFL test types are divided into two: paper-based TOEFL PBT (paper-based test) and internet-based TOEFL iBT (internet-based test). The main difference between the two TOEFL test formats is that when it comes to sections, TOEFL iBT has Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking sections. Since it is a computer-based exam, candidates can view the questions on the computer and record their answers via the keyboard and microphone.
1. Internet-based test - TOEFL IBT
A 35 minute reading section with 2 passages of 10 questions each.
A 36 minute listening session with 5 parts with 28 questions in total
A speaking section that lasts 16 minutes and includes 4 oral tasks
A writing section that takes 29 minutes and includes 2 tasks to complete
2. Paper-based test - TOEFL PBT
A 30-40 minute listening session consisting of 3 parts
A 25-minute structure and narrative section with 15 sentence completion exercises and 25 error detection examples
A reading section lasting 50 minutes and answering 50 questions about passages
A 30-minute writing section with a written essay of approximately 250-300 words
WHAT IS THE TOEFL EXAM STRUCTURE?
- Reading: This part evaluates your ability to comprehend and analyze written texts on science and academic discussions. In the TOEFL reading section, test-takers are presented with two academic reading texts and asked to answer questions based on these texts. In this section students have 20 questions to be solved in 35 minutes.
- Listening: Since July, 2023, the number of questions in the listening section is fixed at 28. Test takers answer questions in 36 minutes by listening to lectures, class discussions and dialogues. This section constitutes 3 lectures/classroom discussions and 2 dialogues.
- Speaking: This section is aimed to assess how well you can express your opinions and ideas in an academic setting. The 4 types of questions that we face here are in preparation for real life situations that can be faced in the classroom. Speaking section lasts for 16 minutes. In order to be successful in the TOEFL speaking exam, you can prepare your own speeches in accordance with previous exam topics, choose how your speech will commence and practice.
- Writing: This part is completely about showing how you can use your English competency in writing academically. This section is composed of 2 tasks and lasts for 30 minutes. In the first task, you write an answer to the listening and reading texts presented. In the second task, you write your own views on an academic discussion. In TOEFL writing, you will create clear sentences and paragraphs that will show your knowledge of grammar and vocabulary.
WHO SHOULD TAKE THE TOEFL TEST?
The TOEFL test has been taken by over 27 million people worldwide to ensure their English skills are adequate. Students who plan to study at a university abroad, scholarship candidates, students applying for visas, workers and English learners who monitor their English progress usually take the exam. Pay attention to university course requirements as whether you need to take the TOEFL and the minimum grade required to apply for the course will be stated here.
TOEFL EXAM FEE
TOEFL exam fee is $157 in our country. The exam fee varies between 160 and 250 dollars depending on the country where the exam is taken. Payment is made by credit or debit card only. No currency other than US dollars is used for payment.Since July, 2023, some countries are provided with the option of paying with the local currency.
WHERE AND WHEN CAN I TAKE THE TOEFL IBT TEST?
Compared to other English language tests in the world, the TOEFL test has more test dates (more than 50 per year) and places. You can take the exam as many times as you want, but not more than once in a 12-day period. If you already have a test appointment, you cannot register for another test date within 12 days of your appointment.
A retake policy is mandatory even if a violation is not detected immediately (eg inconsistent registration information).
If the violation is detected after registration but before the exam date, your exam appointment will be canceled and your exam fees will not be refunded.
If the violation is detected after your exam scores are announced, your scores will be canceled, you will not be notified of the cancellation status and your exam fees will not be refunded.
