GRE General Test Scoring System

Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning scores on the GRE exam are based on the number of correct answers given to the questions. In the Analytical Writing section, each article is graded by at least one trained teacher using a six-point holistic scale. The exam paper is then graded by e-rater, a computerized program developed by ETS that can identify exam characteristics related to writing proficiency.

If the teacher and e-rater score results are close to each other, the average of the two scores is used as the final score. However, if there is too much difference between the teacher and e-rater score results, a second teacher re-scores the exam and the average score given by the two teachers is used as the final score.

Essay scores on the analytical writing test are averaged and rounded to the nearest half-point on a 0-6 point scale. A single score is reported for the Analytical Writing measure. The most important part in scoring the Analytical Writing test is your critical thinking and analytical writing skills rather than grammar and mechanics.

  • The Verbal Reasoning section is scored in 1-point increments on a 130-170-point scale.
  • The Quantitative Reasoning section is scored in 1-point increments on a 130-170-point scale.
  • The Analytical Writing section is scored in half-point increments on a 0-6 point scale.
