International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma What is it?

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IBDP) and the International Baccalaureate Career-Related Program (IBCP) are international high school diplomas that prepare students for English-speaking colleges and universities. International Baccalaureate (IB), an internationally qualified education program that was first implemented in Geneva, Switzerland in 1968 and has been accepted worldwide since its establishment, has been prepared for students aged 16-19; It is a two-year pre-university education.

About 130,000 students graduate with an IB degree each year from schools around the world. Participants usually start in 11th grade and complete the program with the IB final exams in 12th grade in May.

How to Get an International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma?

The IB (International baccalaureate) diploma is a two-year academic program open to students aged 16 to 19. Students who successfully complete the program and its requirements receive an IB diploma. A diploma is an important identity document for college applications and other purposes. The IB diploma program requires students to take courses in six subject areas and pass exams.

In addition to clearing IB diploma subjects, there are three other main requirements. The first requires students to write a long essay based on independent research. Second, it requires students to take a Theory of Knowledge course. This course covers critical thinking and epistemology. Third, it requires the student to participate in a number of extracurricular activities.

 

IB Terms

Of course, in order to be accepted to IB diploma programs, you must have the expected competencies.

  • If you will start the IB diploma program in the 11th grade, the IB requirements can be listed as follows, although it may vary according to the universities.
  • You must have successfully completed grade 10.
  • Your diploma average must be at least 75/100.
  • IELTS overall 6.5. If each band you must have an exam score of at least 6.0 or equivalent.

 

OBJECTIVES AND CURRICULUM


Students gain necessary knowledge about the content and importance of the IB program; To help them develop the most suitable working methods and techniques by using their time in the most efficient way; Developing research skills; To help them develop their writing skills so that they can write prose, essays and essays in an effective and fluent language and present oral comments; To develop independent and critical thinking skills; It aims to help them develop their sense of responsibility towards their individual development, school, society and environment.


SYLLABUS


The diploma candidate must choose one course from each of the six groups within the options offered. In Turkey, the Mother Tongue and Social Sciences courses are taught in Turkish, while the other courses are taught in English.
Group 1: Language A1 - Literature studies are carried out in the language in which the student is most successful, usually in his mother tongue.
Group 2: Language A2 - Language and literature course taught with very proficient students in a second language.
Group 3: Individuals and Societies -Business and Management, Economics, ITGS, Philosophy and Psychology.
Group 4: Natural Sciences - Biology, Chemistry, Physics.
Group 5: Mathematics - Mathematics (Advanced), Mathematical Methods (Standard Level).
Group 6: Electives - Students can choose any course from the first five groups, or they can choose a specially approved course according to the school curriculum.

 

REQUIREMENTS OTHER THAN SIX SUBJECT GROUPS


1. GRADUATION THESIS (EXTENDED ESSAY/EE)
The Graduation Thesis, which is an important part of the IB Diploma Program, consists of a subject belonging to one of the six courses chosen by the student; It is a composition consisting of at least 4000 words, prepared by focusing on a subject of interest within the program and under the supervision of a school counselor. This figure does not include footnotes and bibliography.
2. THEORY OF KNOWLEDGE/TOK
In the Theory of Information course, the origin and validity of various forms of knowledge are examined. In this course, the student learns to develop a personal perspective on the discovery and creation of knowledge. This course is specific to the IB Diploma Programme and must be studied for at least 100 hours spread over the two-year curriculum.
3. CREATIVITY, ACTIVITY, SERVICE (CREATIVITY, ACTION, SERVICE/CAS)
Since the philosophy of the IB is based on the "education of the individual as a whole" view, every diploma candidate must take part in the CAS study and devote 150 hours to this study within two years. If the necessary studies are not done in TOK, CAS and EE fields, the student cannot be entitled to receive a diploma.
